I think the author is right. There is going to be an implosion sometime very soon.

I recently moved from Ubuntu to Debian. ‘Back to the roots’, so to speak.

As Linus has said, the ability

As Linus has said, the ability to merge is perhaps more important than the ability to branch. Branching is just a prerequisite to that.

However I disagree with the author. He's essentially just saying that there will be an 'perception' of an implosion by removing no longer maintained distros.

P.S. I use Debian as well.
