Mark Shuttleworth made some interesting comments recently about the role of the Wine compatibility layer in fostering the migration of Windows users to Ubuntu.  Shuttleworth views Wine, and binary compatibility with Windows applications in general, as a distraction from the real goal of making the free-software world "thrive on its own rules,"; not those borrowed from the proprietary ecosystem. 

Recently we’ve seen some surprising comments about Red Hat’s stand on software patents and, in particular, about one of its patent applications related to the AMQP specification. It looks like clarification is called for.

It's not often that I find something in the comments on a major news site that's more interesting than the original article. But that's exactly what I just came across--and it's a comment about comments.

Davide posted a (micro-)blog entry noting to use the word "widget" rather than "applet" which caused a small flurry of conversation in the comments around the possible reasons for this. In Plasma we rarely do things without thought and conversation and so, yes, there are good reasons for this.
