Is it all too typical on the internet to hear a Linux user go full-on zealot style and say, "YEAH! I use Linux! F**k Microsoft! You people are sheeple! Down with the status quo!" Blah, blah, blah, frickin’ blah.

It's okay to know and to criticize our opposition.

"Linux" users can go on ignoring the ideology and the agenda of Free Software advocates.

It was not the Linux Kernel project which put the free software movement into motion.

That was done many years earlier in 1983 by a man whose name does not rhyme with Linux.

I partially disagree with the author..

I agree with him in the fact that Linux and FOSS people should be as gentle and convenient as possible when talking about Linux and FOSS, because this is the best attitude for someone who really cares about spreading the philosophy to the rest of the world.

However, I disagree with him in that Linux and FOSS people must talk about Microsoft when that's necessary. The Microsoft trolls and fanboi's are spreading loads after loads of FUD and lies against Linux and FOSS everyday, so it wouldn't be a wise decision to just ignore these things and not do whatever is necessary to fight back against them.

Lolololol 'goood linux users

Lolololol 'goood linux users don't do this and that'

good Christians don't talk about the devil. bahahahaha

But I see the point: screaming about ms et al is stupid. There is no 'talk' going on, but rather 'megabash' which is like saying "I think sin is evil" in church O_o

I obviously didn't read the post. I'm just commenting on the title here :) That's why I'm posting here and not in the comment section of the respective blog O_o

clueless

If you don't have a clue what free software and open source is about, you can say it's the best of both worlds.

Using proprietary software has big downsides if you just don't think about that and step over it, you can say all these things. This guy is one of the many people who "think" they know what is best.
"The best of both worlds" It's just not true, there's a lot of reasons for not wanting to use windows, and if these people would take the time to do a little research and use their brain a while. They would come to the same conclusion as the "bad" linux users.

Who are actually just frustrated by an inferior OS being adopted by too much people, which gives it power. I'm sorry to say this, it's not really me, but in this battle it's: if you're not with us, you're against us. Using and paying, is supporting, get it?

Anybody up to writing good directory software?

Tue, 2007-02-20 11:17 — David Jonathan

Since the very beginning, directories (of any kind) have had a very central role in the internet. (I have recently grown fond of Free Web Directory. Even Slashdot can be considered a directory: a collection of great news and invaluable user-generated comments. As far as software is concerned, doing a quick search on Google about software directories will return the free (as in freedom) software directories like Savannah, SourceForge, Freshmeat and so on, followed by shareware and freeware sites such as FileBuzz, PCWin Download Center and All Freeware (great if you're looking for shareware and freeware, but definitely less comprehensive than their free-as-in-freedom counterparts).

Is better education the key to finding better software?

Sat, 2007-03-03 03:25 — Edward Russel

I read David Jonathon's article Anybody Up To Writing Good Directory Software? the other day, which got me thinking about software directories in general. As David mentioned, many of the software directories one finds when doing a quick google search are free as in beer, not as in freedom. But what interests me is the software directories that already exist, providing a combination of both free as in beer software, and open source software. Sites such as Freeware Downloads and Shareware Download don't advertise themselves as providing free as in liberty software, but each of them have a good selection of open source software available... if you know where to look.
