The Free Software Foundation has recognized 2 contributors for finding nonfree components in FSF-endorsed fully free distributions, as part of the "GNU Bucks" bounty program.

There are different reasons people use Unix-like operating systems, including configurable, availability free of charge, powerful command line interface an many more. Some people are motivated by the moral issue: they reject non-free software.

The Free Software Foundation announced a project to assemble a replacement extension library for OpenOffice.org, which will list only free software extensions. OpenOffice.org is free software, and an important contribution to the free software community. However, the program offers the user a library of extensions, and some of them are proprietary.

These test profiles seem irrelevant for free system distributions in that they use some non-free software in order to make their benchmarks "powerful". Phoronix Test Suite is free software: i think it'd be useful to do these benchmarks with software freedom involved...

Richard M. Stallman is an American software freedom activist and computer programmer. In September 1983, he launched the GNU Project to create a free Unix-like operating system; he initiated the Free Software Movement; in October 1985 he founded the Free Software Foundation.

The short answer to that question is that they don't follow the free system distribution guidelines. But since it isn't always easy to see how a particular system fails to follow the guidelines, we still get these questions.
