Linux is an Open-Source Operating System (OS). It was first created by Finnish grad student Linus Torvalds in 1991.

In May 2005, the head of the Office for Computerizing Cuban Society, Roberto del Puerto, announced that the government was preparing for its central administration offices to switch to the free GNU/Linux system, which uses the Linux kernel written by Linus Torvalds of Finland in 1991. A national group was formed for this purpose.

Linux is the first truly free Unix-like operating system. The underlying GNU Project was launched in 1983 by Richard Stallman originally to develop a Unix-compatible operating system called GNU, intended to be entirely free software. Many programs and utilities were contributed by developers around the world, and by 1991 most of the components of the system were ready.

I've been a user of the Linux operating system since kernel 0.99 in 1994. I've watched it improve steadily over the past 14 years, but there was always some function or application missing that meant I had to keep at least one PC around with a current version of Windows on it. Linux could do 95% of the job, but sometimes I needed that other 5%.

Linus Torvalds was only 22 when he decided in 1991 to share with friends and colleagues the code of Linux, the new OS he had created.
