For those that haven't been paying attention to our recent coverage of Valve's Steam Client / Source Engine coming to Linux, last month we discovered Linux references in the Steam Mac OS X client and other Linux support references, which that combined with word from sources yielded no doubt that Steam/Source is coming to Linux.
THERE'S PLENTY of consternation floating around the Steam forums this morning as open sauce geeks get het up over Valve's persistant refusal to port its popular Steam game-delivery client to something a little more penguin-based.
Some still didn't believe the existence of a Steam client for Linux with Source Engine support, but it's something we have said for nearly two years based upon our sources and then the emergence of these binaries.
So the devil called me this afternoon and said they where having a snowstorm in hell.
In other news Valve announced that their revolutionary "content delivery service" known as "Steam" is being ported to OSX and will be available as early as April 2010. No really its true, straight from the horse's mouth. In addition the actual client and "Steam-works" being brought to Apple's operating system Valve also plans to port all of the Source Engine games.
Yesterday we reported on Proof In Steam's Mac Client Of Linux Support as we received the bash launcher used by the closed-beta Steam on Mac OS X that showed support for Linux. Today there are yet more signs of Linux support when studying Valve's Mac OS X client.
We have our hands on the bash launcher used by Valve's Steam client for Mac OS X that was recently announced. While such scripts are usually insignificant, there is something interesting within it and that is explicit support for Linux.
An article from Phoronix posted here started a rumors that Valve is working on a Linux version of Steam. It got us very exited about it, unfortunately for the moment there is no Linux version of Steam in development :(
The past few days we have been reporting on Valve's Steam client coming to Linux (and some of the Source Engine games too) soon as we had found Linux references within the Steam Mac OS X client and then other Linux references. We even ended up finding the unreleased Linux files on the Valve servers.
