Since the release of Linpus Lite Desktop 1.4, which I reviewed here, Linpus Lite Desktop has been going down hill, both in terms of features and in the number of applications installed out of the box.

Linpus Lite is the distribution for netbooks and smartbooks developed and maintained by Linpus Technologies, Inc. of Taipei, Taiwan. The company’s flagship Linux distribution used to be Linpus Desktop until it decided to focus on the Lite and QuickOS line.

Linpus Lite is a Linux distribution published by Linpus Technologies, Inc., a Linux software solutions provider based in Taiwan. Linpus Lite Desktop is, as the name suggests, the version designed for traditional desktop computing.

Unlike other Linux distributions that feature a graphical package manager, Chakra’s tend to have issues handling major updates, so a decision was made not to ship a graphical package in the April ISO image. Which meant that installing and updating applications (and the system) on a default installation of Chakra Archimedes 2012.04 could only be accomplished from the command line.

Linpus Lite 1.4 is the latest distribution that I am currently reviewing. While the review is in progress, I thought posting a few screenshots is in order. Linpus Lite 1.4, released on July 30, 2010, is the latest update from Linpus Technologies, and also the first to come with a standalone installer. So while the review is still being out together, enjoy these screenshots.

KDE has released a series of updates to the Plasma Desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Frameworks. This update is the second in a series of monthly stabilization updates to the 4.6 series. 4.6.2 brings many bugfixes and translation updates on top of the latest edition in the 4.6 series and is a recommended update for everyone running 4.6.1 or earlier versions.

The last edition of Linpus Lite that was reviewed on this website, was Linpus Lite 1.4, and that was in September 2010 (see Linpus Lite 1.4 review). That edition was good in some ways, bad in others, but in general, was usable, though it lacked basic security features that I expected to see in a modern Linux distribution.

Linpus Lite 1.4 is the latest update to the Linux distribution published by Linpus Technologies, Inc. of Taipei, Taiwan. Though designed for use on netbooks and low-powered computers, it is one of the best distributions that I have reviewed for publication on this website.

The idea to work one day without graphical applications and use only text utilities like wget isn't new but… Here is the list of essential tools that are invaluable to make "text mode day" real. Many described applications are already installed out-of-the-box after certain Linux distro installation, if not command sudo aptitude install will help you (or yum install).
