Ubuntu 11.04, code-named Natty Narwhal, is the latest version of the popular Linux distribution. Its release marks the end of Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE). The major new feature in this release is Unity, a desktop interface which replaces GNOME 2 as the default desktop environment.

Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 1 is the first release in the run up to Ubuntu 11.04, aka Natty Narwhal. The unique feature of Ubuntu 11.04, when it is released, will be the Unity interface, which will be the default desktop interface on computers that meet the minimum hardware requirements. Other computers will be able to use the Classic desktop interface.

This tutorial shows how you can enable Compiz Fusion on an Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) desktop with the Unity interface (the system must have a 3D-capable graphics card which I assume it has because otherwise Unity wouldn't start, and GNOME would be used instead). With Compiz Fusion you can use beautiful 3D effects like wobbly windows or a desktop cube on your desktop.

I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal edition. The latest Ubuntu comes by default with the Unity interface. Previously, I already got to play with the unity interface on the netbook edition but was not impressed at all.

Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't come with GNOME 3 / GNOME Shell (in fact it's not even available in the repositories but only in a PPA) and instead it comes with an interface designed especially for Ubuntu called Unity (based on GNOME 2.x).

At the Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) today in Florida, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth announced that the Unity shell will become Ubuntu's default user interface across both the desktop and netbook editions. Unity, which was introduced as the new netbook interface in the recent Ubuntu 10.10 release, will arrive on the desktop in Ubuntu 11.04 next year.
