I read a recent post called “Why I Won’t Be Recommending Linux to Family this Holiday Season.” The funny part is, the real reason…he doesn’t want to take the heat for telling them to use Linux and have something go wrong! Wimp!

Have you heard about ZFS? It’s a generation-defining stable high-performance high-end filesystems, created by Jeff Bonwick at Sun, and ported over to Mac OS X and the BSD family. Oh, and for Linux, using the FUSE (Filesystem in userspace) kernel abstraction. Here’s my ZFS story.

In our house, the refrigerator door is where we post the family calendar, showing our family and friends' birthdays, school terms, and important events, along with public holidays. We create the calendar using a nifty command-line program called PCAL, which produces a standard one-month-per-page calendar with each day in a separate box.

This week a friend posted on her blog that she was marking all of her Flickr images “all rights reserved” (instead of with a Creative Commons license) and “friends and family only” (instead of publicly viewable) because of this story.
